5x5 Storage Unit or 5x10: How Big Each Is and What Fits

Illustration of a bicycle, a small shelf, a suitcase, boxes and gray lidded bins in front of a closed silver roll-up door.

You've got more than a closet's worth to put away and less than a household, and the two small sizes on the list are a 5x5 and a 5x10. A 5x5 storage unit is 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep, 25 square feet of floor, about the size of a large closet. A 5x10 is 5 feet wide and 10 feet deep, 50 square feet, about the size of a walk-in closet, and twice the floor of a 5x5.

We're a family-owned business renting storage units in Rockport, Texas. Small units are the easiest to get wrong by guessing, and the easiest to get right with a tape measure. There's a small satisfaction in a unit packed so neatly that everything you need is right at the door.

How big is a 5x5 storage unit?

A 5x5 storage unit is 25 square feet: 5 feet across the front and 5 feet to the back wall. Our Size Guide puts it at about the size of a large closet, with room for boxes and a few small things.

In inches, that's 60 inches on each side, which is the number to hold your pieces against. Corner to corner it measures a little over 7 feet, so a long, thin piece such as a rolled rug or a ladder laid flat can sometimes go across on the diagonal.

To see it before you rent, tape a square 5 feet on each side on a garage floor or a driveway, and set your boxes and pieces inside it. It's a small square, and the taping shows you that before moving day does.

What does a 5x5 storage unit look like?

A 5x5 storage unit looks like a small, square room with bare walls and a bare floor, close in size to a closet with the shelves taken out. Standing in the doorway of an empty one, you can see the whole floor at once, which makes it easy to plan.

At our property every unit is either drive-up or climate-controlled. A drive-up unit's door opens straight onto a concrete drive aisle, so you park at your unit door and unload a few steps. A climate-controlled unit is inside its building, and you reach it through the building entrance.

How high you can stack depends on the unit, so measure your tallest pieces before moving day and check each one against the unit's door and ceiling when you arrive. In a small unit, height does a lot of the work.

How big is a 5x10 storage unit?

A 5x10 storage unit is 50 square feet: 5 feet wide and 10 feet long. The Size Guide puts it at about the size of a walk-in closet, holding a dorm room's contents. It's twice the floor of a 5x5 and half the floor of a 10x10.

In inches, it's 60 inches wide and 120 inches long. Corner to corner it measures a little over 11 feet, and the 10-foot side wall is long enough for a sofa standing on its feet.

A 10x5 has the same 50 square feet, turned the other way. Our post on what size storage unit you need for a 1-bedroom goes through the difference between a 5x10 and a 10x5, and which wall the door is on.

What does a 5x10 storage unit look like?

A 5x10 storage unit looks like a narrow room twice as long as a 5x5, with bare walls and a bare floor. Think of a walk-in closet with the rods taken down, or a short hallway. Which wall the door is on decides how you load it, so ask when you rent.

The long walls are where the furniture goes, with boxes stacked in front and on top of the sturdy pieces. With 5 feet across, there isn't room for a walking path down the middle once it's full, so the order you load in is the order you'll unload in.

Measuring your things for a small unit

Give every piece on your list three numbers: how long, how deep and how tall. Take each one at its widest point, across the arms, the legs or the handles, and round up to the next half foot, since in a small unit an inch decides whether a piece goes in straight or not at all.

Measure the long things against the walls: 5 feet across, and 5, 7, 8 or 10 feet deep depending on the size. Measure each bike from wheel to wheel and across the handlebars. Measure the tallest pieces too, and check them against the unit's door and ceiling when you arrive.

For boxes, count rather than measure. Measure one box of each size, count how many of each you've packed, and plan them as stacks.

What can fit in a 5x5 storage unit?

A 5x5 storage unit can fit stacked moving boxes, a bicycle stored upright, seasonal decorations, and files and paperwork, as our Size Guide lists it. What fits comes down to its 25 square feet, so add up the floor your things will cover.

Boxes 18 inches on a side fit three across and three deep on a 5x5's floor, nine stacks in all, and stacked four high that's 36 boxes. Sterilite's 27-gallon Industrial Tote measures 28 1/2 inches long and 19 5/8 inches wide on the outside, so six of them fit in a single layer, and each layer you stack adds six more.

A side-by-side washer and dryer fits a 5x5 too. Whirlpool's laundry sizing guide puts the pair at about 54 inches wide and 32 to 34 inches deep, about 13 of the 5x5's 25 square feet.

A twin mattress doesn't lie flat in a 5x5. Sealy's mattress size guide gives a twin as 38 inches wide and 75 inches long, longer than the 5x5's 60 inches, and Sealy's storage advice is to store a mattress as flat as possible with little to nothing stacked on top. The Size Guide puts a twin mattress in a 5x8, which is 40 square feet.

Can a couch fit in a 5x5 storage unit?

A three-seat sofa won't sit on its feet in a 5x5. La-Z-Boy's Kennedy Sofa, as one example, is 77 inches wide, and even its apartment-size version is 69, while a 5x5 is 60 inches on each side.

A sofa fits along the 10-foot wall of a 5x10, where it takes about 20 square feet and leaves the rest of the floor for boxes. The Size Guide puts a three-seat sofa with a bedroom's furniture in a 5x15, which is 75 square feet.

An armchair is a different story. One about 3 feet square takes 9 square feet, and the Size Guide's card for the 5x7 lists an armchair with moving boxes, a bicycle and seasonal gear.

A bike in a small unit

The Size Guide lists a bicycle on every small card from the 5x5 to the 5x10. Stand it upright or lean it along a wall, turn the front wheel so the handlebars sit flat against the wall, and plan about 6 square feet of floor for it, the figure our post on what size storage unit you need for a 2-bedroom uses for each bike.

Rinse it of salt and sand before it goes in, and let it air out. Put it in last if you'll ride it during the stay, so it comes out first.

The 5x7 between them

A 5x7 is 35 square feet, a little more than a 5x5, with room for boxes and one piece of furniture such as an armchair, as the Size Guide puts it. In inches it's 60 inches wide and 84 long.

The extra 2 feet adds a row. Boxes 18 inches on a side fit three across and four deep, twelve stacks, or 48 boxes stacked four high. Sterilite's tote fits eight to a layer.

If your list is a few dozen boxes and one chair, the 5x7 is worth a look alongside the 5x5 and the 5x10.

What can fit in a 5x10 storage unit?

A 5x10 storage unit can fit a full mattress, a dresser, moving boxes and a bicycle, as our Size Guide lists it. It can also take a sofa along one wall with boxes stacked beside it, and it holds about twice what a 5x5 does on the floor. Boxes 18 inches on a side fit three across and six deep, 18 stacks, or 72 boxes stacked four high, and Sterilite's tote fits twelve to a layer.

Sealy gives a full mattress as 54 inches by 75, about 28 square feet, and it lies flat across the 5-foot width with about 6 inches left over.

Worked lists from our other posts show where a 5x10 tops out. A studio's furniture and boxes without its appliances, a full mattress, a small dresser, two chairs and 20 boxes, came to about 46 square feet in our post on what size storage unit you need for a 1-bedroom; with its refrigerator and a washer and dryer, a whole studio is a 10x10.

Our post on student storage works through a dorm room. A coastal summer's patio set, two bikes, beach chairs, coolers and twelve totes came to about 46 in our post on seasonal storage. Both fit inside the 50.

Can a queen bed fit in a 5x10 storage unit?

A queen mattress can lie flat in a 5x10 when the unit measures a full 60 inches across, because the mattress takes the whole 5-foot width. Sealy's guide gives a queen as 60 inches wide and 80 inches long.

The Size Guide puts a queen mattress in a 5x15, and a full mattress, at 54 inches wide, in a 5x10. If the queen is going into a 5x10, measure the unit's width when you arrive before you carry the mattress in, and plan the rest of the list around the 80 inches of floor it takes.

The bed frame comes apart into rails and a headboard that stand against a wall, and the hardware goes in a labeled bag taped to the headboard.

A king mattress, 76 inches wide by Sealy's guide, is wider than a 5x10's 60 inches, so a king lying flat needs a unit 10 feet wide, such as a 10x10.

How big is a 5x15 storage unit?

A 5x15 storage unit is 75 square feet: 5 feet wide and 15 feet long, half again the floor of a 5x10 and three-quarters of the floor of a 10x10. In inches it's 60 inches wide and 180 inches long, and corner to corner it measures a little under 16 feet.

The Size Guide puts a 5x15 at about a bedroom's worth of furniture, with a sofa. The 15-foot side wall takes a sofa on its feet with floor beside it for boxes. Boxes 18 inches on a side fit three across and ten deep, 30 stacks, or 120 boxes stacked four high, and Sterilite's tote fits 18 to a layer.

5x5 or 5x10: which to choose

Choose by the floor your list needs. A 5x5 suits boxes, files, seasonal decorations, a bike and the overflow from a closet. A 5x7 adds room for one piece of furniture. A 5x10 takes a dorm room's worth, a sofa along one wall with boxes, or a season of outdoor things. A whole studio apartment, appliances included, is a 10x10.

If you're between two sizes, sketch both on graph paper, with each square standing for a foot and each piece cut out to scale, and the one that holds your list with the front stack in reach is your size.

If your list runs past 50 square feet, our post on what size storage unit you need for a 1-bedroom works a one-bedroom through, and the one on how big a 10x10 is covers the next size up. For the long sizes, our post on how big a 10x15 and a 10x20 are goes through both. The Size Guide covers all 13 sizes we rent.

Two small units, or one bigger one

Some of what you're storing may need a climate-controlled unit and some may not, and our post on climate-controlled storage goes through which belongings need it. When a list splits that way, two small units can be simpler to load and to use than one large one.

The same arithmetic applies to each. Add up the floor for each half of the list, and choose a size for each half.

Packing a small unit

In a small unit, packing well matters more than in a big one, because every box you can't reach is one you'll have to move to get at another. Load the back first with what you'll want least, and work toward the door.

Stack with the heaviest boxes at the bottom and the lightest on top, and keep each stack straight. NIOSH's lifting guidelines give 51 pounds as the most to lift with two hands under ideal conditions and suggest putting fewer items in a container to make it lighter, so books and files go in small boxes.

Turn every label to face the door. Keep the boxes you'll want during the stay at waist height in the front stack, where you can lift them down without moving anything else. Our post on how to pack for storage goes box by box.

Food, gas cans and propane tanks are never stored with us, and anything with a fuel tank needs our written permission before it goes in. Batteries are never stored with us either.

Small units for files and seasonal things

A small unit suits papers you need to keep but not at hand. The National Archives' advice on storing family papers asks for boxes big enough for the originals to lay flat or upright without folding or bending, with a spacer board when a box isn't full. Label each file box on two sides with the years or the subject inside, so the one you need is easy to find.

Holiday decorations are another good fit. Check the lights before they go in, as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's holiday decorating advice suggests, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections, and throw out damaged sets.

If you run a short-term rental, a small unit can hold the spare linens and guest supplies between seasons; list them the same way, and the floor total tells you which size.

Moving day at a small unit

A small unit's load may be one carload or two. Load the car in reverse, so the things for the back of the unit come out first, and bring a hand truck for the heavy boxes.

On a hot day, the National Weather Service's heat advice is to reduce, eliminate or reschedule strenuous activities until the coolest time of the day, and to drink plenty of water even if you don't feel thirsty. If you're moving house, our post on moving storage covers using a unit around the move.
